This past Wednesday was both Jaime`s birthday and Fabiola`s birthday.  We had a small party for both of them.

Throughout the entire 40 days of lent, Antigua begins to gear up for Semana Santa.  Semana Santa is the last week of lent and the week right before Easter.  From what I have heard, this is the time of the biggest celebrations in Guatemala.  Antigua is famous for their processions and alfombras (carpets made of sawdust, fruit, flowers, stone dust, bread, etc).  The alfombras are meant to represent a very transitory existence because they last for only a night or so.  People stay up all night constructing the alfombras only to have them walked over by the people carrying massive floats representing scenes from the bible.  Stella has told me that during Semana Santa, there are so many alfombras in the street that they are nearly continuous.

There are other places that have celebrations for Semana Santa but Antigua is by far the most famous in all of Central America.  Stella`s house is a perfect place to be staying during this time because the cost of a hotel (if you can find one) is about 3x the cost…

Via Crucis. This is a very small float. There are only 6 people carrying it. During the week of semana santa there are floats with over 100 people carrying them.

This procession of Via Crucis was last Friday.  The procession was made up of probably 400 – 500 people.  There were guitars, children singing, and candles in everybody`s hands.    At the tail end of the procession there were huge drums that would set a sort of marching beat.

I was completely amazed throughout the entire night.  I`m pretty sure I had a huge smile on my face the entire time.  At one point I said to Stella “esto es increible (this is incredible)” to which she replied, “esto no es nada (this is nothing)”.  I can`t wait to see the bigger processions.

Every procession is put on by a different church.  This one happened to be one of La Merced`s.  After walking for about an hour and a half or so, we walked through the gigantic open doors of the church to hear a few last songs and a closing ceremony from the priest.

So things have changed a bit at home even in just the past few days.

Miguel left this morning for MA.   Miguel was good times.  He had alot of good one liners like “Vives solo un tiempo”, “pinta la ciudad rojo”, etc.

Before he left, Stella, Neri, Miguel, Carla, and I drove to the next pueblo over to see the celebration for Ash Wednesday.

And of course we had to get a snack too. I forget the name of this, but it is made of fried plantain and is covered wth condensed milk, honey, or chocolate. It is in the same family as fried dough... definitely carnival food.

And we got a new member of the family.  Her name is Muñeca (doll).   Stella got her from her cousin.   Huesito was getting really jeleous when everybody was paying so much attention to the bird.   Stella´s new favorite way to play with Huesito is to hold her buttondown sweater like she´s holding a bird and talking to it and chirping… Huesito gets all jeleous and starts wimpering…

I`ve come to the conclusion that Huesito needs his own TV show.  It doesn´t have to be long, I think 5 minutes every morning would be enough to get you going in the morning.

So the family has changed a bit.  Henry has since gone back to Canada.  I am now staying with Miguel (Mike) and Russ and Judy.

Neri and Miguel

Neri and Miguel

Miguel is from Western Massachussets.  He is down here to scope out plots of land where he can build his future house.  He has sold his house in Mass and is planning to move down here for good in November.  He´ll be down here for about three weeks.  He´s my roomate now.  His Spanish is pretty good and his vocabulary is way bigger than mine… we are pretty good about only speaking to eachother in Spanish.

Russ and Judy just arrived the other day.  They are from Kentucky and are here to study Spanish for a month.  They have many Hispanic friends and want to be able to communicate with them better.  Russ has been studing by himself for about a year or so…

Russ and I were very amazed by this mysterious fruit. Stella is in the foreground answering Judy´s questions about it.

So I´m not going to Spanish school anymore.  This is not by choice but by necessity.  Since I am working for Tono in Guatemala city,  I do not get back until 5:30 or so and am usually more or less exhausted from the camioneta experience.  I usually just get home, eat dinner, and chat it up with Stella and family…

So I am speaking Spanish in the office, but I still need to speak in English from time to time when things are important (more often than not they usually are).

Hopefully, if I can work more in Antigua, I wil be able to get a tutor (usually cheaper than school and most also work in the schools anyways)

So I have decided to contribute to Carla and Faviola´s college fund.

Since Stella corrects me about 3 times per sentence, she suggested that I need some sort of motivation for catching my mistakes before they happen.  She proposed that I put 25 quetzale centivos (about 3 cents US) into some sort of piggy bank every time she catches me make the same mistake.

After searching for a few minutes, she returned with this little gem… a bank para niňas.

She suggested that I get a lock for it… because pretty soon this things gonna be loaded.

And how practical, it even has a handle so that I can carry it around with me.

The family I am staying with is awesome.  There are 6 of us in one house.  The mother and father are Stella and Neri and the 2 daughters are Clara and Faviola.  They are all really cool.  Yesterday I spent the majority of the day (and night) talking to Stella and Karla.  I basically talked to them until it was late and my head hurt.  After hours of Spanish, I at one point asked Carla how her English was (in English) and for the first 2 or 3 sentences proceded to fumble the words of my own native language.  I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing…  Karla is an interior design student and an English teacher at a local school, so hopefully soon we will be able to jump into architectural powertalk.

I am also staying with 2 other gringos.  The first is Henry, a Canadian guy who owns a greenhouse business about an hour outside of  New York state.  He is taking spanish so that he can communicate better with some of the Mexican help he has in the greenhouse.    The second is Jaime, a man of about 75 who has been living with the family for more than 10 years.   Jaime is a bit elusive but I will try my best to get a photo of him…
