Signage

Ok, so give me a break on the photos here.  I took most of them at night.  I just want to get stuff up here so that everybody can see what it is that I’ve been up to.  Once I get some good lighting and a bit of free time I will do some real documentation of this stuff.   Morgan (my boss) and I have worked together designing all of this stuff.

1.  Kafka entry sign

This was my first project at Kafka.  The space was a clothing store up until about a week before I started working there.  In addition to the sign, we laid out the tables to try to make it a usable space rather than just an entryway.

We originally just wanted to do “Kafka” with an arrow pointing up saying “Terrace”.  We then ended up getting Barnum & Bailey’s with a bunch of text inside the arrow.  “Kafka” and the arrow were painted with a brush and all of the text inside the arrow were stenciled (no laser cutting involved here).  “Kafka” was autocadded out, dimensioned, and then chalk-lined onto the wall (drawing to come).

2.  Chair Badge

So the idea here was to have a unifying element throughout Kafka.  Kafka is big and has many different spaces, so we figured by painting all of the chairs the same color we’d be able to create a little bit of a connection between them.  This is an ongoing project.  So I’ve done about 20 or so chairs (with the help of Tonio).   Phase 1: paint all of the chairs brown.  Phase 2:  Add generic chair badge stencil to each chair.  Phase 3:  Give each chair a specific number depending on the room and table it is it (will undoubtedly move, but it’ll be kind of a tracking system).  Phase 4:  Not quite sure, we were thinking of asking the regulars what they wanted on “their chair” and painting whatever they wanted on it…

We have a few other different kind of chairs.  I will post them as I take pictures…

3.  Where’s the Terrace?

Kafka has an awesome (and generally unknown) upstairs terrace.  We’ve really been trying to advertise the terrace to get the word out that there actually is one.

I don’t think this sign actually works, it just kind of adds to the texture of the place…
