So I met up with Jen and David yesterday.  We planned to meet eachother at their hotel around noon or so.  Since they were running a bit late due to transit problems, I decided to wait in the restaurant for a bit and then made my way over to the bar.  I hung out there for an hour or two, learned about guaro, and exchanged bartender war stories with the bartenders there.  The bartender introduced me to their limonada de mente… which I totally need to reverse engineer and begin making.  It’s lemonade, gingerale, and mint leaves (alcohol optional).  Kind of like a mojito but not really.  I also bought a drink made from ginger and fancy rum, but unfortunately this seems a bit too complicated to reverse engineer… lots of pre-drink-making preperation involved with this one.

We had lunch at a local Soda (as little diner/restaurants are called here) and then made our way back to the hotel.  Not overly impressed with San Jose in general, we decided to hang out in the hotel instead.   We made a bodega run and then watched “No Country for Old Men”.

Before dinner I had called the hostel I had stayed in the night before only to find that they were completely full.  Jen told me that it was no problem to request a cot in their room and just stay with them.  She explained that they needed to wake up at 4:00 in the morning to catch an early cab to the airport, but if I didn’t mind this then I was more than welcome to stay in their room.  This seemed like the best option.

The hotel was really nice by the way, it was a renovated victorian house that had been converted to a hotel.

So midway through dinner, David handed me a keycard and was like, “here you go, room 30″.  Due to my lack of critical thinking skills at the moment, I thought he was just giving me an extra card to their room, however, unbeknownst to me, they had actually ended up getting me my own private room.

p.i.m.p... and it has two beds. People seriously need to come visit me down here, for some reason, wherever I go, I always have multiple beds in my room (which for the most part are usually unoccupied)... oh, and its good that they were doing minor construction in the room next to me this morning, otherwise I probably would have been a lazy bastard and slept all day... the bed was SO comfortable.

So anyways, a big thank you to Jen and David.  Hope you guys had a great time down here.  It was great to meet up with you, even if it was only for an afternoon…

Otto’s mother and little brother are here.  I met up with them for some wine and cheese (with promises of Pollo Campero despues – but it all fell through because it ended up being closed).

Rachid is going to be here until the beginning of September.  We’ll hang out.  He really wants to try the redbull at Bistro Cinq.  I told him that we have the best in town.

However, due to my passport troubles, I will be gone the majority of the time that he is here.  I will be in Costa Rica between the 20th and the 30th.  However, the time that he is here we’re gonna paint the town red.

He’s also started a blog.  You can visit it at http://chino44.blogspot.com/

And don’t forget to give him a hard time about it having absolutely no content right now.

So it was Stella`s birthday on May 24th.  We celebrated it all day.  I don`t have any pictures of the party because my camera was out of commission…

We left Stella`s on Monday morning to go back to Guatemala City.

We had alot of fun with Stella and fam.  We did alot of the Semana Santa activities together.  This was very helpful because Stella had the lowdown on exactly what was happening and where.  Stella was very good about calling us and saying, “Brian, where are you, you need to come and see the blah blah blah procession, it`ll be passing in front of the house in about 5 – 10 mins!”  We would then run halfway across Antigua to get back to the house just in time to miss it.    It wasn`t a big deal though because we would then run a few blocks down the street and catch up with it.

Shaved Huesito with a bone that is almost as big as he is. It was a gift from Jaime for his birthday.

And just for kicks, here`s a pic of shaved Huesito with a bone that is almost as big as he is. A gift from Jaime for his birthday.

After eating breakfast at a restaurant in Antigua, I made my way to the bathroom.  At some point while I was in there (couldn`t have been more than 2 minutes)  my mother had a revelation.  When I came out, she told me that she had made up her mind and was going to begin learning Spanish.  She said that this would be very beneficial for her work, and also, since I`m never coming back to the US, it`ll be helpful for her to know it whenever she comes to visit.

This past Wednesday was both Jaime`s birthday and Fabiola`s birthday.  We had a small party for both of them.

Throughout the entire 40 days of lent, Antigua begins to gear up for Semana Santa.  Semana Santa is the last week of lent and the week right before Easter.  From what I have heard, this is the time of the biggest celebrations in Guatemala.  Antigua is famous for their processions and alfombras (carpets made of sawdust, fruit, flowers, stone dust, bread, etc).  The alfombras are meant to represent a very transitory existence because they last for only a night or so.  People stay up all night constructing the alfombras only to have them walked over by the people carrying massive floats representing scenes from the bible.  Stella has told me that during Semana Santa, there are so many alfombras in the street that they are nearly continuous.

There are other places that have celebrations for Semana Santa but Antigua is by far the most famous in all of Central America.  Stella`s house is a perfect place to be staying during this time because the cost of a hotel (if you can find one) is about 3x the cost…

Via Crucis. This is a very small float. There are only 6 people carrying it. During the week of semana santa there are floats with over 100 people carrying them.

This procession of Via Crucis was last Friday.  The procession was made up of probably 400 – 500 people.  There were guitars, children singing, and candles in everybody`s hands.    At the tail end of the procession there were huge drums that would set a sort of marching beat.

I was completely amazed throughout the entire night.  I`m pretty sure I had a huge smile on my face the entire time.  At one point I said to Stella “esto es increible (this is incredible)” to which she replied, “esto no es nada (this is nothing)”.  I can`t wait to see the bigger processions.

Every procession is put on by a different church.  This one happened to be one of La Merced`s.  After walking for about an hour and a half or so, we walked through the gigantic open doors of the church to hear a few last songs and a closing ceremony from the priest.

So things have changed a bit at home even in just the past few days.

Miguel left this morning for MA.   Miguel was good times.  He had alot of good one liners like “Vives solo un tiempo”, “pinta la ciudad rojo”, etc.

Before he left, Stella, Neri, Miguel, Carla, and I drove to the next pueblo over to see the celebration for Ash Wednesday.

And of course we had to get a snack too. I forget the name of this, but it is made of fried plantain and is covered wth condensed milk, honey, or chocolate. It is in the same family as fried dough... definitely carnival food.

And we got a new member of the family.  Her name is Muñeca (doll).   Stella got her from her cousin.   Huesito was getting really jeleous when everybody was paying so much attention to the bird.   Stella´s new favorite way to play with Huesito is to hold her buttondown sweater like she´s holding a bird and talking to it and chirping… Huesito gets all jeleous and starts wimpering…

I`ve come to the conclusion that Huesito needs his own TV show.  It doesn´t have to be long, I think 5 minutes every morning would be enough to get you going in the morning.

So the family has changed a bit.  Henry has since gone back to Canada.  I am now staying with Miguel (Mike) and Russ and Judy.

Neri and Miguel

Neri and Miguel

Miguel is from Western Massachussets.  He is down here to scope out plots of land where he can build his future house.  He has sold his house in Mass and is planning to move down here for good in November.  He´ll be down here for about three weeks.  He´s my roomate now.  His Spanish is pretty good and his vocabulary is way bigger than mine… we are pretty good about only speaking to eachother in Spanish.

Russ and Judy just arrived the other day.  They are from Kentucky and are here to study Spanish for a month.  They have many Hispanic friends and want to be able to communicate with them better.  Russ has been studing by himself for about a year or so…
